Customs Issues...Let's Visit the Zoo

AJ, Stefanie, Rachel & Dominic

We have been here a whole three days. We've registered in our town, filled out our residency paperwork and applied for driver's licenses. By the way, so glad that Delaware is one of the states that is reciprocal with Germany for getting a driver's license. We just have to pay a fee, surrender our US license and supply a picture. Residents of non-reciprocal states have to go to driving school, take a first aid course and pass both a written and practical test!

We also found out when we got here that our household shipment couldn't start clearing customs until we were registered, which foiled our plan of being able to move into the house one or two days after we arrived. So now we are in fill our days for ten days mode.

So of course, we found ourselves at the zoo. The Tierpark (Animal park) is pretty cool. It's an older zoo, setup in the different continent sections format. It's fun to walk around and explore and there are plenty of animals to see and watch and some roaming free to pet. The swinging bridge was fun too.

We took the train and on the very short walk from the station to the zoo we had to take a bridge that crossed over the Isar river. All along the rails and fence on the bridge were locks with peoples names on them. Apparently this happens on bridges all over Munich, lovers put the lock on the bridge and then throw the key into the Isar as a sign of their everlasting love. I wish I had thought to take a picture.

It was a good way for me and the kids to spend a day, exploring a different part of our new city.

Germany!

We are here. We are tired, excited, nervous, and jet-lagged but ready to start this new chapter in our lives. Our first lunch in Germany was at the Tutzinger Hof in our new hometown Starnberg, traditional, delicious Bavarian food.

The kids promptly fell asleep in the car after lunch. A combination of jetlag and a big meal. I would include those pictures but I want them to still talk to me!
