"Kissing Bridge" in Copenhagen |
Steve and I celebrated our 25th anniversary in Malmo, Sweden and Copenhagen, Denmark. It was such a gift to be able to get away for a long weekend together! We truly are so lucky.
Malmo is a sweet town in Sweden, we started there because Steve had a conference. I did a little exploring on my own, checking out the church and town square as well as beautiful park with a charming windmill. Also, there were art exhibits all over the city, part of a summer time project. It was fun to randomly stumble upon different ones. Malmo is most known (I think) for the Turning Torso, a tower that looks to be "turning" as you watch it. We had a nice dinner and then delicious dessert on the top floor of our hotel overlooking the city.

This reminded me of my sister's paper dress exhibit |
The next day we took the train back to Copenhagen. What a beautiful and engaging city. We of course enlisted the advice of our Danish friend Charlotte and she did not steer us wrong. From the beautiful hotel, Nyhavn 71, to her restaurant recommendations Cafe Victor and The Union Kitchen, as well as general things we had to see!
The waterfront in Nyhavn is just beautiful, hotel was at the end of this row.
We started with a canal tour which was perfect because it was the warmest weather of our weekend. It is a great way to see a fair amount of Copenhagen and we had a very entertaining guy who sang Elvis songs every time we went under a bridge.
I especially loved that this church looked like it had a smiley face on it. It's actually used for art exhibits now, not as a church. The "mouth" was really a gold ring that was part of an exhibit.
Afterwards we tired the traditional smorbrod for lunch. Super yummy open-faced sandwiches. There were so many different ones to choose from.
Due to a drastic change in the weather we headed to Carlsburg Brewery for a tour and tasting. It's not a big tour but the tasting was excellent and super informative.
Before dinner we enjoyed the cava our hotel had gifted us for our anniversary while we watched people stroll along the waterfront.
The next day we walked all through Copenhagen, exploring and shopping and enjoying the different architecture and sites. We of course visited the Royal Copenhagen store too.

I absolutely loved this angel at the Church of our Lady. (Vor Frue Kirche)

As we toured around we dodged pop-up thunderstorms, right before we visited the Fredriks Kirke it had stormed for five minutes, then it cleared and was beautiful and sunny. This church has beautiful Rococo architecture.
Of course I made Steve stroll all the way to the Little Mermaid, I'm glad we got to see her. She is less mermaid looking than what I expected and definitely smaller, however, she is beautiful. On the way to her we walked through a pretty park and stumbled upon the gorgeous church.
Our last morning in Copenhagen there was a car show on the road next to our hotel. It was fun to walk through on our way to Christianshavn.
Within this group of islands is Freetown Christiania. It's an alternative living community basically a commune where they abide by their own rules. You cannot take photos inside.
Afterwards we walked to the Church of our Savior to climb the outdoor staircase on the tower. It was windy and cold AND a little scary but I'm so glad we went up there. The views were amazing! We had to wait to do this until our last day because it was too windy the rest of the weekend and the tower was closed.
